Welcome.

I have always thought of myself as a storyteller—whether writing news stories, magazine articles, books, or essays. When I started working as a journalist, I dove deep into the "New Journalism" exemplified by folks like Tom Wolfe and Joan Didion, studying how they perfected their craft. It's probably not surprising that I find myself drawn to storytelling given that I spent my youth on a remote Maine island often listening to old fishermen and great aunts and uncles tell stories—real and imagined—day after day. The island lacked telephone service nor did it have cable television or the internet, so locals passed time and entertained themselves the way folks had done for eons—they talked and talked and I listened and listened.

Times change. Technology has evolved, social media is a dominant force, and the old foundations of journalism have faded away. Today, even the island has high speed internet. Regardless, you can always find and tell good stories if you are curious. I will admit to being a curious soul, a trait that has been critical to success during my forty years as writer, editor, and journalist. I can't imagine that will ever fade away. Many of the stories I find will end up on these "pages" as well as those from the past. So, I hope you look around and check back here often as this new website develops—I am confident you will find something interesting. When you do, just pull up a chair, as my grandmother would say, and sit a spell.

DAVID L. LUNT
(1938-2025)

David Lunt was the most irreplaceable and instinctive leader I've ever known; the most tireless and effective worker I've ever watched; the most remarkable and fascinating man I've ever met; and the most selfless and inspirational father (and grandfather) I've ever loved. I miss him today, and I will miss him always.
My father, a man who rose from humble roots to become a iconic coastal figure, died January 8. He was 86. It may be a cliche, but his death undeniably heralded the end of an era. While his life can't be replicated, he left an amazing legacy and carved his name into enough metaphorical granite, that while he will be missed, he will not be forgotten.
